It seems the scramble for control of the Cyber World is well under way. In the last 2 years we have seen the rise and sale of some amazing online business and applications. The most recent is the sale of Instagram to Facebook this month.
What is Instagram you ask? According to Wikipedia Instagram is a free photo sharing program launched in October 2010 that allows users to take a photo, apply a digital filter to it, and then share it on a variety of social networking services, including Instagram’s own. A distinctive feature confines photos to a square shape, similar to Kodak Instamatic and Polaroid images.
It quickly became a huge hit on Facebook and Twitter, so huge, that on 9 April 2012, just 18 months after it launched, Facebook announced it would acquire the company for approximately $1 billion in cash and stock, with plans to keep it independently managed.
Facebook and Instagram are not the only online success stories this year. In the last few months we have seen the acquisition of Jump On It by US organization, Living Social, just two short years after Jump On It’s launch. It is not known what the final sale price was, however it has been suggested, by the SMH, to be in excess of the Yahoo!7’s acquisition of group-buying site Spreets for a rumoured $30-$40 million.
Draw Something, a Pictionary style app that has been downloaded more than 35million times, went from inception to purchase all within the first quarter of 2012! Draw Something is rumoured to have sold for approximately $180million to Zynga and online game application company.
Right now we are in the technology era, and its moving fast! Who would of thought that a drawing application could achieve such huge results in such as short time span. What’s next? Don’t scoff at your ideas; continue to think big and work towards your goals. You never know where it could take you.
